Frequently asked questions
Why does this give two possible birth years instead of one?
Because "age" alone doesn't specify a birth date - someone who is 30 today was born in the current year minus 30 if their birthday already happened this year, or the current year minus 31 if it hasn't happened yet. Without knowing the birth month and day, both are equally valid.
How do I calculate my exact birth year if I know my birthday?
If you know the specific birth date, use the Age Calculator instead - enter the birth date directly and it tells you the exact age, rather than working backward from age alone with two possible years.
Is 'calculate DOB from age' the same as this tool?
Not quite - DOB (date of birth) includes month and day, which age alone can't determine. This calculator estimates the birth year specifically; the exact day and month within that year isn't recoverable from age alone.
Someone told me their age - how do I figure out 'when was he born'?
Enter their age above to get the two possible birth years - without knowing whether their birthday has happened yet this year, that's as precise as age alone allows.
If someone is 25 today, what are the two possible birth years?
If the current year is 2026, they were born in either 2001 (if their birthday already passed this year) or 2000 (if it hasn't yet) - both are consistent with being 25 right now.
Can this handle an age given in months, like for a baby?
No - this calculator works with whole years of age only. For a baby or young child's age in months, you'd need a tool that tracks age with finer granularity than a single birth year.
Why can't the calculator narrow it down to just one birth year?
Age alone only tells you how many full years have elapsed since birth, not where in the calendar year the birthday falls - without that extra piece of information, both candidate years remain equally possible.
