Frequently asked questions

Are these live, real-time exchange rates?

No - this calculator uses a static, built-in reference rate table, not a live market feed. Exchange rates fluctuate constantly, so for an exact, current conversion, switch the "Rate source" field to "Enter my own rate" and input today's actual rate from your bank, card issuer, or a live-rate source.

Why would my bank or card give me a different rate than this calculator?

Banks, card networks, and exchange services typically add their own margin or fee on top of the market ("mid-market") exchange rate, so the rate you're actually charged is usually somewhat worse than the reference rate shown here - this calculator shows an approximate market rate, not what any specific provider will charge you.

Can I convert from any currency to any other currency listed?

Yes - choose any two currencies from the From and To lists; the calculator computes the cross rate between them (via their rate relative to USD) automatically, so you're not limited to converting to or from US dollars specifically.

How do I get an exact conversion instead of an estimate?

Switch "Rate source" to "Enter my own rate" and type in the current rate you actually have (from your bank, a currency exchange, or a live financial rate source) - the calculator will use that exact rate instead of the built-in reference table.

Why does the calculator show 4 decimal places for the exchange rate?

Exchange rates are often quoted with several decimal places because the difference compounds significantly on larger amounts - a rate rounded to just 1-2 decimals can meaningfully misstate the converted total for a large transaction.

Does this work for converting a large amount, like for a wire transfer or major purchase?

The math works for any amount, but for anything with real financial stakes - a wire transfer, a large purchase, a currency-hedging decision - use "custom rate" mode with the exact rate your bank or provider is actually quoting you, not the built-in reference rate, since even a small rate difference matters a lot on a large amount.
