Frequently asked questions
How much water should a dog drink per day?
A common reference is roughly 50 to 60 mL per kilogram of body weight per day from all sources. Individual healthy dogs can fall outside that range, so it works best as a general point of comparison.
How is this different from the Water Intake Calculator?
The Water Intake Calculator is designed for people and uses a human body-weight and exercise rule of thumb. Dogs have different needs, so this tool uses a canine reference instead.
Should I limit my dog's water to this amount?
No. Dogs should have constant access to clean water. The range is a reference for what is typical, not a cap.
Why might my dog drink more than the range?
Hot weather, exercise, a dry kibble diet, nursing puppies, and some medications can all increase drinking. Unexplained, sustained increases can also be linked to health problems, so check with a veterinarian.
Does wet food count toward water intake?
Yes. Moisture in wet or fresh food contributes to total water intake, which is why dogs on those diets often drink less from the bowl.
Can this tell me if my dog is dehydrated?
No. It is not a diagnostic tool. Signs such as lethargy, dry gums, or sunken eyes need prompt veterinary attention regardless of any calculation.
