Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the right application rate?

Use the rate on the product label, or the recommendation from a soil test or local agricultural extension service. This calculator only multiplies your area by the rate you enter.

Why does the tool not suggest a rate?

Correct rates depend on the crop or lawn, soil test results, the product's nutrient percentages, and local rules. A single suggested number could be wrong or harmful.

Is the rate per unit of product or per unit of nutrient?

Check your label. Most consumer labels give product per area. If a recommendation is in pounds of nitrogen, first divide by the nutrient fraction of the product to get product weight.

Can I apply more than the label says to speed up results?

No. Over-application can injure plants, harm water quality, and violate label directions. Follow the label.

How does this differ from the Compost or Mulch Calculators?

Those estimate volume for a given depth over an area. This estimates product weight for a given rate over an area.

How accurate is the bag count?

It is rounded up to whole bags. Uneven spreading and spreader calibration can change how far a bag goes, so check your spreader's settings.
