Frequently asked questions

How do I measure heart girth?

Run a soft tape around the barrel just behind the elbow and withers, snug but not tight, and read it as the horse breathes out.

How do I measure body length?

Measure in a straight line from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock, with the horse standing square.

How accurate is this estimate?

It is a useful approximation, often within a few percent for typical horses, but it can be further off for very thin, heavy, pregnant, or unusually shaped animals.

Can I use this to calculate medication doses?

No. Dosing decisions should be based on a scale weight and your veterinarian's instructions, not a tape estimate.

Why is there a horse type option?

Younger and smaller animals carry weight differently, so common versions of the formula use a different divisor for them.

How is this different from a weight converter?

A weight converter changes units, such as kilograms to pounds. This tool estimates a weight from body measurements.
