Frequently asked questions

Does this tell me how much fish oil to give my dog?

No. It intentionally does not calculate an amount. It only adds up the EPA and DHA listed for one serving of a product so you can share clear information with your veterinarian.

Why not calculate a dose from my dog's weight?

Appropriate supplementation depends on your dog's health, diet, medications, and the purpose of use, not weight alone. Only a veterinarian who knows your dog can decide that.

What are EPA and DHA?

They are the two main long-chain omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil. Labels usually list them in milligrams per serving.

Are all fish oil products interchangeable?

No. Products differ in concentration, ingredients, and formulation, and some may contain additives that are not appropriate for every dog. Ask your veterinarian which product is appropriate.

When should I talk to my vet about fish oil?

Before starting any supplement, especially if your dog has a medical condition, takes medication, or is scheduled for surgery, since omega-3 supplementation can affect clotting and interact with some medications.

How is this different from the Fish Oil for Cats Calculator?

Both use the same conservative, informational approach. This one is scaled and worded for dogs; use the Fish Oil for Cats Calculator for feline products instead.
