Frequently asked questions

Is this password generator secure?

Passwords are generated entirely client-side using your browser's random number generator and are never sent to a server.

How long should my password be?

12 characters minimum is a common baseline; 16+ is better if the site allows it. Longer passwords are exponentially harder to brute-force than adding more character types to a short one.

Why are similar-looking characters like 'l', '1', 'I', and 'O' excluded?

This generator leaves out visually ambiguous characters so a password you have to type or read off a screen (rather than copy-paste) isn't confused between a lowercase L, an uppercase I, and the digit 1.

What makes a password 'strong' beyond just length?

A strong password combines length (12+ characters) with unpredictability - a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols in no predictable pattern, avoiding dictionary words, names, or reused passwords across sites. Length matters more than complexity alone: a long random passphrase is often stronger than a short complex one.

If I uncheck all the character type options, what happens?

You need at least one character type selected for a password to be generated - with nothing checked there's no character pool to draw from, so leave at least one of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, or symbols enabled.

Does increasing the length matter more than adding more character types?

Generally yes - for example, a 20-character password using only lowercase letters and numbers has a larger search space for an attacker to brute-force than a 10-character password using all four character types, because each added character multiplies the possibilities exponentially while each added character type only multiplies them by a small constant factor.

Is this the same as a 'random password generator' or 'strong password generator'?

Yes - those are all names for the same kind of tool: generating passwords from a random character pool rather than a human-chosen phrase, which is exactly what this generator does using your browser's random number generator.
