Frequently asked questions
How much area does one bale of pine straw cover?
It varies by bale size, brand, and how thickly you spread it, commonly somewhere in a wide range depending on the product. Check your specific product's label or ask your supplier rather than assuming a fixed number.
How is this different from the Mulch Calculator?
The Mulch Calculator computes volume from an area and a chosen depth, suited to bulk or bagged mulch measured by volume. Pine straw is typically sold and rated by bales covering a certain area, not by volume and depth, so this tool works directly from bale coverage instead.
Should I add extra for uneven beds?
Yes. Irregular shapes, obstacles, and settling over time typically mean buying a bit more than the exact calculated amount is a reasonable practice.
Can I use metric measurements?
Yes. Choose square meters, and enter your coverage per bale in square meters to match. Keep units consistent between area and coverage.
Why does the tool show an unrounded exact number?
So you can see how close you are to needing an extra bale, useful if you are deciding between ordering slightly less or rounding up further for a margin.
Does thickness of application matter?
Yes, thicker layers cover less area per bale. If your coverage figure assumes a specific depth, apply pine straw to roughly that same depth to get accurate coverage.
