Rabbit Color Calculator

Select each parent's genotype at two commonly discussed rabbit color loci - agouti (A) and black/chocolate (B) - to see simplified offspring color probabilities. Real rabbit coat color involves several more genes; this covers only these two in isolation.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the Punnett Square / Dihybrid Cross Calculator?

The Dihybrid Cross Calculator works with generic, unnamed gene pairs (A/a, B/b) and reports abstract genotype and phenotype ratios. This tool applies that same two-gene Mendelian math specifically to two named rabbit coat-color loci and translates the results into simplified color category names.

Does this predict my rabbits' actual coat colors?

Only in a limited, educational sense. Real rabbit coat color depends on several interacting genes beyond the two modeled here, including dilution, extension, and the C-series (which controls color intensity down to albino). This tool cannot capture those interactions.

What do agouti and self mean?

Agouti describes the banded hair pattern seen in wild-type coloring, where each hair has bands of different color. Self (or solid) describes a coat that is one uniform color without that banding, caused by the recessive form of the agouti gene.

What is the difference between black and chocolate at the B locus?

This locus affects the type of dark pigment (eumelanin) produced. The dominant form typically produces black pigment, while the recessive form produces a lighter brown, called chocolate.

Can two agouti parents produce a self (solid) offspring?

Yes, if both parents carry a recessive agouti allele (Aa), some offspring can inherit two recessive copies (aa) and be self-colored, even though both parents show the agouti pattern.

Should I use this for serious breeding decisions?

No. This is an educational simplification of two loci only. For breeding programs, especially involving specific color goals or genetic health considerations, consult resources or breeders specializing in rabbit genetics for your specific breed.
