Raised Bed Soil Calculator
Enter your raised bed's length, width, and fill depth, plus how many identical beds you have, to estimate the soil volume needed. Real soil quantity can differ due to settling, existing soil, and amendments like compost.

Frequently asked questions
How is this different from the Potting Soil Calculator?
The Potting Soil Calculator is built for containers and pots - rectangular planters or round pots, usually smaller and often multiplied by a handful of identical containers. This tool is sized for raised garden beds, which are typically larger rectangular structures, and lets you plan for several identical beds at once.
Should I fill the raised bed completely to the top?
That is a common approach, though some gardeners leave a small gap below the rim, or plan a layered fill (coarser material at the bottom, growing mix on top) rather than solid soil throughout. Adjust the fill depth to reflect the mix you're actually adding.
Do I need to fill new raised beds with pure soil?
Not necessarily. Many gardeners blend soil with compost or other amendments, or use a layered filling method. This calculator estimates total fill volume regardless of what mix you use; it doesn't recommend proportions.
Why might I need less soil than calculated?
If the bed already has existing garden soil at the bottom, or if you're filling around large amendment materials, you may need less purchased soil than the full calculated volume.
Can I calculate multiple beds of different sizes?
Calculate each different-sized bed separately using this tool and add the totals together. The number-of-beds field is for identical beds of the same dimensions.
Does soil volume decrease over time?
Yes, soil typically settles and compacts somewhat after watering and over a growing season, so many gardeners top off beds periodically rather than expecting the initial fill to stay exactly the same.
