Rat Cage Size Calculator
Enter the number of rats and a floor-space allowance per rat to estimate a minimum enclosure floor area, then optionally check a specific cage's dimensions against that target. This does not represent one universal legal or welfare standard - check current guidance for your rats.

Frequently asked questions
Is the default area allowance a legal minimum?
No. It is only an editable example. Space recommendations vary by source, rat size, and cage style, so replace the default with guidance appropriate to your rats.
Does adding levels or shelves count toward this floor area?
Not directly - this calculator estimates bare floor area only. Multi-level cages with shelves and ramps can provide additional usable space beyond the footprint, which many rat owners and welfare guides consider valuable, but this tool doesn't calculate that separately.
How many rats should live together?
Rats are highly social and most welfare guidance recommends keeping at least two together rather than housing a single rat alone, but compatibility and group size also depend on the individual rats. This calculator doesn't assess social compatibility, only floor area from your own inputs.
How is this different from the Rabbit Cage Size Calculator?
Both use a similar per-animal area allowance approach, but this tool is scaled and worded for rats, whose space needs and typical enclosure styles differ from rabbits. It also adds an optional check against a proposed cage's actual dimensions.
What does the 'meets your target area' result mean?
It simply compares the floor area of the cage dimensions you entered against the minimum area calculated from your allowance and number of rats. It only checks the floor space math, not overall cage suitability, quality, or safety features.
Should I use this for a temporary carrier instead of a home cage?
No, this is meant for a rat's regular home enclosure floor area, not a travel carrier, which is used for short periods and has different sizing considerations.
