Sod Calculator
Enter the lawn area to cover, or its length and width, plus the coverage per sod piece or roll from your supplier. The calculator gives the total pieces needed, with an optional waste percentage for cuts and odd edges. It does not assume one universal roll size.

Frequently asked questions
How is sod calculation different from grass seed calculation?
Sod is a solid, pre-grown product purchased and measured in discrete pieces or rolls that each cover a fixed area, so the math is area divided by coverage per piece. Grass seed is measured by weight applied at a rate per area, so the Grass Seed Calculator instead multiplies area by a seeding rate. They solve related but structurally different material problems.
What size is a standard sod roll or piece?
There isn't one standard size - growers and suppliers cut sod in different dimensions and coverage amounts. Check your specific supplier's product listing for the coverage per piece or roll.
Why include a waste allowance?
Curved beds, borders, and obstacles like trees or walkways usually require cutting sod pieces, which wastes some material. A waste allowance adds a buffer so you don't run short partway through installation.
Can I enter length and width instead of total area?
Yes. Choose length x width, enter both, and the tool multiplies them and converts to the area it needs.
Should I round down to save money?
Rounding down risks running short mid-installation, when matching sod may be harder to source quickly. This calculator always rounds up to the next whole piece for that reason.
Does this calculate cost?
No, only quantity. Multiply the number of pieces by your supplier's price per piece if you want a cost estimate.
