Tree Leaves Calculator
Count the leaves on one representative branch, then enter how many similar branches the tree has. The calculator scales up to a rough total, rounded to two significant figures because a sampling estimate cannot be precise.

Frequently asked questions
How many leaves does an average tree have?
There is no single number. Leaf counts vary enormously by species, size, age, and season, which is why this tool estimates from your own sample rather than quoting a typical figure.
How do I choose a good sample branch?
Pick a branch that looks typical in size and leafiness, not the fullest or sparsest one. Better still, count three or four branches from different heights and sides and use the average.
How do I count the number of branches?
Count the branches of similar size to your sample, from a distance or in photos, and group larger and smaller ones separately if the tree has very different branch sizes.
Why is the answer rounded?
A sample-based estimate cannot justify exact figures. Rounding to two significant figures avoids implying precision the method does not have.
What does the uncertainty percentage do?
It widens the estimate into a plausible range. Raise it if your samples differed a lot from each other or the tree is irregular.
Does this work for conifers with needles?
It can, using needles or needle clusters as the counted unit, but the number will be very large and even less precise.
