Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the Grass Seed Calculator?

The Grass Seed Calculator estimates bulk seed weight to cover a lawn area. This one counts individual seeds for rows of vegetables and rounds up to whole packets.

How is this different from the Plant Population Calculator?

The Plant Population Calculator works out plants per acre or hectare from row and in-row spacing. This tool starts from your actual rows and gives seeds and packets for a garden or small plot.

Why sow more than one seed per spot?

Not every seed germinates. Sowing two or three per spot and thinning to the strongest seedling is a common way to avoid gaps.

Where do I find the germination rate?

Most seed packets print it, usually with a test date. Older seed germinates less well, so use a lower percentage for seed saved from previous years.

Why does it add one to the number of spots per row?

A row has a plant at both ends, so a 20-foot row at 6-inch spacing has 41 spots, not 40.

Does this work for crops planted in beds rather than rows?

Yes, if you treat each planted line as a row. For broadcast sowing, use the seed rate on the packet instead.
