Frequently asked questions

Does this page tell me how to dilute bleach?

No. It is a safety guide and provides no quantities, ratios, or preparation steps. Use only the manufacturer's directions for your specific product.

Why doesn't this page have a dilution calculator?

Bleach strength varies between products and using it incorrectly can be hazardous, so a general-purpose recipe tool could be misleading. For general concentration arithmetic, see the Cell Dilution or Alligation calculators, which are math tools and not cleaning guidance.

What does the percentage on the label mean?

It is the concentration of the active ingredient, commonly sodium hypochlorite or available chlorine, in that product. It differs between products, so read the label each time.

What is the relationship between percent and ppm?

For a mass fraction, 1 percent is 10,000 ppm. This is only a unit relationship and says nothing about how to prepare any solution.

Can I mix bleach with other cleaners for a stronger effect?

No. Mixing bleach with ammonia, acids, or other cleaning products can release toxic gases. Use one product at a time and ventilate.

What should I do after an accidental exposure?

Move to fresh air and contact your local poison control center or emergency services. Follow the first-aid instructions on the product label.
