Chemical Name Calculator

Enter a chemical formula such as NaCl, MgO, or CO2. This tool only recognizes a curated list of simple, unambiguous binary ionic and molecular compounds; it does not attempt to name organic compounds or anything requiring structural information beyond the formula.

Frequently asked questions

Can this name any chemical formula?

No. It only recognizes a curated list of common, simple binary ionic and molecular compounds. Formulas outside that list return a clear message rather than a guessed name.

Why can't every formula be named automatically?

Systematic chemical nomenclature follows detailed rules that often require structural information a molecular formula alone doesn't provide. Isomers, for instance, share the same formula but have different structures and different names.

Does this handle organic compounds?

No. Organic nomenclature (IUPAC rules for carbon chains, rings, and functional groups) needs structural data this tool doesn't have, so organic compounds are outside its scope.

What if my formula isn't recognized?

The calculator tells you plainly that it isn't in the supported list rather than inventing a name. You can still get its molar mass from the Molecular Weight Calculator.

How is this different from the Chemical Equation Balancer?

The balancer works with whole reactions and finds coefficients; it doesn't name compounds. This tool looks up a single formula's common name from a fixed list.

Are common names and systematic (IUPAC) names the same?

Not always. This tool gives the common name where one is listed; a compound may also have a distinct systematic name that isn't shown here.
