Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my grade as a percentage?

Divide the points you earned by the total points possible, then multiply by 100. Scoring 85 out of 100 gives 85/100 × 100 = 85%.

What percentage is each letter grade?

On the standard US scale this calculator uses: 90-100% is the A range, 80-89% is B, 70-79% is C, 60-69% is D, and below 60% is F, each split further into +/- bands (e.g. 93-96% is a straight A, 90-92% is A-).

Is this the same as a gradebook calculator?

Yes - "gradebook calculator" and "grading calculator" both describe figuring out a grade percentage and letter grade from points earned, which is exactly what this tool does for a single test, assignment, or exam.

How many points can I miss and still get an A?

It depends on the total points and where the A cutoff falls (90% on this calculator's default scale) - for a 100-point test, you can miss up to 10 points; for a 50-point test, up to 5 points, since the cutoff scales with the total.

What score do I need on the next section to raise a 78% to an 80%?

This calculator computes a single grade from one earned/total pair, so to plan a target grade, treat your desired percentage as the goal and solve total × 0.80 = points needed - for example, on a 100-point assignment you'd need 80 points, 2 more than the 78 you have now.

Does a 0.5% difference actually change my letter grade?

It can - since letter-grade cutoffs are hard boundaries (like 89.5% rounding to 90%), a fraction of a percentage point can be the difference between a B+ and an A-, which is why it's worth double-checking earned and total points for rounding errors before accepting a borderline grade.
