Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate total hours from a time card?

Add up the hours worked each day of the pay period. This calculator sums seven daily entries (Monday through Sunday) into a weekly total, then splits that into regular and overtime hours based on your threshold before calculating gross pay.

Does this handle clock-in and clock-out times?

No - enter the total decimal hours already worked each day (e.g., 7.5 for 7 hours 30 minutes), not clock-in/clock-out times. If you only have clock times, subtract clock-in from clock-out (accounting for any unpaid break) to get the decimal hours first.

How does the overtime calculation work?

Hours up to your overtime threshold (40/week by default, the standard US federal threshold) are paid at your regular hourly rate. Any hours beyond that are paid at your rate times the overtime multiplier (1.5× by default) - both portions are calculated separately, then added together for total gross pay.

Can I change the overtime threshold or multiplier?

Yes - both are editable fields. Some jurisdictions or union contracts use a different weekly threshold than 40 hours, or a daily overtime rule instead of weekly, and some use double time (2×) rather than time-and-a-half for certain hours - adjust the threshold and multiplier fields to match your actual situation.

How do I convert minutes to a decimal for a time card?

Divide the minutes by 60. 30 minutes = 0.5 hours, 15 minutes = 0.25 hours, 45 minutes = 0.75 hours - add that decimal to the whole-hour count for each day.

If I worked 45 hours at $20/hour with 1.5× overtime after 40, what's my gross pay?

40 regular hours × $20 = $800, plus 5 overtime hours × $30 (time-and-a-half rate) = $150, for a total gross pay of $950 - enter your actual daily hours above to get this breakdown automatically.

Is a time card calculator the same as a payroll calculator?

No - a time card calculator like this one converts hours worked (including overtime) into gross pay. A payroll calculator goes further, applying tax withholding, deductions, and benefits to arrive at net (take-home) pay.
