Frequently asked questions

How does the weighting work?

Each item's probability of winning equals its weight divided by the sum of all weights. If Gold=1, Silver=3, Bronze=6 (total 10), Gold has a 10% chance, Silver 30%, and Bronze 60%.

Can I use decimal weights?

Yes - weights don't need to be whole numbers or add up to any particular total; only the ratio between them matters for the odds.

How is this different from the plain Random Number Generator?

The Random Number Generator picks uniformly (every outcome equally likely). This tool lets you assign different odds to different items, useful for prize drawings, loot tables, or any pick where some outcomes should be more common than others.

What format does my list need to be in?

One item per line, formatted as "name, weight" - for example "Bronze, 6". The last comma-separated value on each line is read as the weight, and everything before it is the item name.

What happens if I give an item a weight of 0?

It's included in the list but can never be selected - a weight of 0 means a 0% share of the total, so the picker effectively skips it while still displaying it as an option.

If I have three items each weighted 1, what are the odds for each?

Exactly 1/3 (about 33.3%) each, since the weights are equal - the total is 3, and each item's share is 1 divided by 3, regardless of what the actual weight numbers are.

How is this different from a 'random name picker' or 'wheel spinner'?

A plain random name picker or wheel spinner gives every entry an equal chance. This tool is for when outcomes shouldn't be equally likely - like a loot table where rare items should come up less often than common ones.
